Tree Farm Tour_June 27, 2010

What better way to enjoy a warm (okay, hot!) Sunday in June but to caravan with 25 of your (soon to be) closest Oakvillegreen friends to a tree farm in the Niagara area, followed by a delicious lunch at our President, Liz Benneian's home in Jordan.

That's what a group from Oakvillegreen did and thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Earthgen tree farm in Wainfleet (www.earthgen.ca) and the guided tour by owners Adam Koziol and wife Joelle. Everyone found it fascinating as we strolled between rare cherry birch or were towered over by butternuts. We even saw the approx. 1,000 white oak seedlings, collected by OCA from the Great Bronte Road Oak, that Adam is growing for us. The kids had a blast too!

Then, a relaxing lunch and house/property tour at Liz's historic home before repotting another couple of hundred white oak seedlings, also from the Bronte Rd. oak, that are being grown at Liz's home. An enjoyable and worthwhile day to say the least.....perhaps the first in an annual tree farm tour event by Oakvillegreen?!

Lawson Park Planting_May 29, 2010

Despite the heat on Saturday, May 29th, over 30 hard working volunteers came out to Lawson Park in S.E. Oakville to plant over 150 native trees & shrubs at our last planting of the Spring. This planting was a continuation of the renaturalization project that Ground Breakers started last May along the western and northern fencelines of the park. On Sunday, a team from Shaarei Beth El Congregation helped complete the planting. Many thanks to all who endured the hot temperatures and made our final planting a great success!

Quietly located just east of Trafalgar Rd., lies an unassuming place called Algrove Park. It was here, that about 50 volunteers: students, neighbours and (of course) Edgar's amazing friends (visit meandmycan.com) took shovel into hand and proceeded to plant over 100 trees and shrubs in about one hour! This planting was a more dense planting than some of our others, as its goal was to extend the woodlot in behind the park and therefore all of the trees and shrubs were located in a close proximity. Congrats to everyone who came out and planted with us!

Oakhaven Pond Planting_May 1, 2010

Despite the looming (and eventual) rain, dozens of volunteers, including students, neighbours and Edgar's amazing friends (visit meandmycan.com), came out to Oakhaven Pond, just north of Third Line & Upper Middle, and planted 200 trees and shrubs. These stormwater mgmt. ponds typically have very difficult soil conditions and this one was no exception. However, the volunteers persevered (through the rain too!) to get everything done! Great job everyone!!

To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the Ground Breakers volunteers, featuring an enthusiastic group from Rotherglen, planted 75 native trees and shrubs along the trailhead (southside) at Bronte Rd. & Rebecca St. This area is enjoyed by daily walkers and garter snakes alike, so now it will be even more enhanced by a "natural" makeover by our team. Thanks again to Rotherglen!
