Celebrating National Forest Week Planting Hope: How Trees and Community Action Shape a Resilient Tomorrow

National Forest Week (Sept 19-26)  is a reminder that forests are more than collections of trees - they are living systems that protect our climate, support biodiversity, and strengthen the health of our communities. In Oakville, our urban forest is one of our greatest natural assets, and every tree planted today helps build a more resilient tomorrow.

Last week, over 250 Oakvillegreen volunteers, partners, and neighbours came together to plant 1115 native trees and shrubs over 5 planting events and across various neighbourhoods. Each planting event brought people of all ages and backgrounds into the shared work of caring for the land - newcomers planting their first Canadian tree, youth learning how forests store carbon, families returning year after year to watch “their” trees grow.

These moments reflect the true power of community. When people come together with shovels in hand, they are not just planting trees, they are planting hope, connection, and climate resilience. Native trees cool our neighbourhoods, support wildlife, absorb stormwater, and store carbon for decades. They make our town healthier, greener, and loved by everyone.

Every tree planted also contributes to Oakville’s long‑term goal of reaching 40% canopy cover by 2057. It is an ambitious target, but one that becomes possible when community members step forward, year after year, to help restore and expand our urban forest.

National Forest Week celebrates forests across Canada but here in Oakville, it also celebrates you. Our volunteers, partners, and supporters are the heart of this work.

Our Oakvillegreen team feels deeply grateful and genuinely privileged to work alongside so many dedicated, generous people. Together, we are growing a stronger, more resilient future, one rooted in kindness, shared purpose, and a deep belief that the choices we make today can shape a healthier world for everyone who calls Oakville home.

Looking to help us add to our urban canopy?

There's 2 Public Tree planting events coming up in October and we'd love to see you there.
