Wild Neighbours: Discovering Our Local Species

Grade Level: JK - 8

Duration: 50 minutes | Setting: Indoor/Outdoor | Max # of students: 30

Get to know the incredible wildlife that calls Oakville home! This interactive, curriculum-connected program invites students to explore the birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other wildlife living right in their local community. Through outdoor observation, inquiry, and discovery, students will learn about the life cycles of common urban wildlife, the important roles they play in our ecosystems, and why protecting biodiversity matters.

Students will also discover how to respectfully and safely share their community with local wildlife, from knowing what to do when encountering a coyote to learning how to observe a butterfly without disturbing it. Together, they’ll explore simple ways to support their wild neighbours, including planting native perennials and shrubs, picking up litter, and practising the art of noticing the nature around them.

We make it easy to get your students outside, spark curiosity about local wildlife, and build environmental literacy through hands-on learning and meaningful connections with nature.
