What are street trees?
Street trees are the trees planted in the boulevard, the strip of land between the sidewalk and the road. In some neighbourhoods, the Town’s road allowance extends further onto what looks like a homeowner’s front lawn. That means a tree that appears to be on private property may actually be a Town‑owned tree.
How do we know if the tree belongs to the Town?
Oakville maintains a
public tree inventory of all trees in parks, road rights‑of‑way, and Town facilities. If a tree is listed there, it’s Town‑owned. If you are still not sure, contact the Town of Oakville for confirmation.
Who is responsible for maintaining street trees?
If a tree is Town‑owned:
- The Town handles pruning, inspections, and removals
- The Town ensures clearance over sidewalks and roads following industry standards and a rotational maintenance program
- The Town handles hazard pruning, storm damage, and health-related maintenance
- Residents should not prune or alter the tree themselves or hire someone to do it on their behalf
- Residents should care for trees on private property, which are the homeowner’s responsibility
Can residents build structures or any hardscaping around street trees?
Absolutely not!
- Trees need to breathe. They take in oxygen from tiny air pockets in the soil.
- Trees need water - hard surfaces shed water instead of absorbing it.
- Rocks and concrete cook the soil and make it compact and lifeless!
